On Defects in Solids

چکیده
The thermodynamical potential for dilute solutions is rederived, generalized and applied to defects in solids. It is shown that there are always defects in solids, i.e. there is no perfect solid at any finite temperature. Apart from the temperature-dependent concentration of defects, another case is presented, where the defect concentration does not depend on temperature. With standard notations we may write dE = −pdV + T dS + µdN (1) at equilibrium, whence d(E + pV − T S − µN) = V dp − SdT − Ndµ. (2) We may introduce the thermodynamical potential Θ = E + pV − T S − µN , (3) and, noticing that E, V, S, N are extensive, while p, T and µ are intensive quantities, we have Θ = ∂Θ/∂N · N. On the other hand, we have from 1

Cavitation in elastomeric solids: I—A defect-growth theory
It is by now well established that loading conditions with sufficiently large triaxialities can induce the sudden appearance of internal cavities within elastomeric (and other soft) solids. The occurrence of such instabilities, commonly referred to as cavitation, can be attributed to the growth of pre-existing defects into finite sizes. This paper introduces a new theory to study the phenomenon...
متن کاملDefects and Structural Analysis of Multi-Wall Carbon Nano Tubes via Ball milling and Cryo-milling
Nano fillers are part of new studies to enhance various properties of fluids and solids. For example, adding nanoparticles as an enforcement in nanocomposites or as an additive to improve thermal or electrical properties in nano-fluids are of extreme importance in science and industry. There are numerous methods to uniformly disperse nanoparticles in fluid and solid phase. One of the well-used ...
متن کاملDefect pressure, formation volume, and temperature dependence of formation properties of point defects in ionic solids
— The concept of local defect pressure is developed and is applied to determine the elastic relaxation about point defects in ionic solids. The method is superior to that of Kanzaki forces for treatment of Coulomb and many-atom interactions. The lattice sums for the Coulomb interaction and the relaxation volume of Schottky defects in NaCl and KC1 in the static limit are given; the use of neutra...
متن کاملA tentative description of the crystallography of amorphous solids
2014 A number of continuous random lattices can be classified as specific one-to-one mappings of ordered lattices of spaces of constant curvature onto the usual 3-dimensional euclidean space. These mappings put emphasis on two types of lattice defects : surface defects for spaces of constant positive curvature (i.e. spherical spaces), disclinations for spaces of constant negative curvature (Lob...
